Picking up from the midseason finale cliffhanger, the ragtag teenage crew of the USS Protostar have escaped Gwyn's evil father, the Diviner (John Noble), and they are en route to rendezvous with Starfleet. Meanwhile, they're being chased by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and little does the young crew know the Diviner hid a terrible, Starfleet-destroying weapon on the Protostar.

After some technical difficulties where the actors joked about writing a song called "John from Screen Rant," Screen Rant had a blast interviewing Ella Purnell and Brett Gray about what they're excited for the fans to see in the second half of Prodigy season 1, and their ideas for a dream Star Trek: Prodigy crossover.

Ella Purnell & Brett Gray Talk Star Trek: Prodigy
Screen Rant: I would love to hear that "John from Screen Rant" song, by the way.
Brett Gray: Ah! (laughs)
Ella Purnell: (laughs) I was hoping you could hear that.
Brett Gray: We're gonna make an entire album.
Ella Purnell: We're gonna name our band John from Screen Rant.
I love it. I'll be your roadie.
Brett Gray: Done!
If you guys were on the Protostar instead of your characters, would you want to hook up with Starfleet right away? Or would you rather just stay out on your own and do whatever you want?
Ella Purnell: Oh, good question. Um, do I still have access to the food replicator, either way?
You have the ship and everything about it. It's all yours.

Ella Purnell: I think that'd be fine. I wouldn't want to risk it. Starfleet's pretty cool, though. It's a hard question. Brett, what would you do?
Brett Gray: I think I would get to Starfleet at some point. But I would definitely like to do a little cruise and play on the holodeck for some time. And the food replicator.
Ella Purnell: I'd wanna see the sights.
Brett Gray: Yeah, why not? I've never been to all the quadrants, you know? Why not?
That would be my answer too. I've seen the next five episodes, and they are amazing. Do you guys have a favorite moment or something you just can't wait for everyone to see in the next batch?
Ella Purnell: I have a lot.
Brett Gray: Me too.
Ella Purnell: I mean, the season finale is so intense. And it answers some of the questions but actually raises more questions which, you know, any good finale will do. There's so many moments. It's hard to say. But the finale takes the cake for me.

Brett Gray: Yeah, the finale is pretty epic. (laughs)
I actually asked Brett this on Star Trek Day. So, I want to ask you, Ella: You know that Strange New Worlds is crossing over with Lower Decks. Are you interested in the crossover yourself? And would you play Gwen in live-action with full prosthetics?
Ella Purnell: Yes and yes to both questions. The prosthetics I've been thinking about in the past hour, and I think it would take a long time and I don't love that. But if we could, I don't know... I mean, animatronics are great these days. Maybe I could still get paid for the likeness of my character [if] it's a robot. Maybe we get Elon Musk on board.
Brett Gray: Wow.
Following that train of thought, which Star Trek would you want Prodigy to cross over with?

Ella Purnell: Lower Decks. I think it's so funny. I think it'd be fun. I don't know, do we do like a live-action crossover or is it like an animated crossover? Because it would be kind of cool to mix the two animation styles. I don't know how we would do that. I love the way Prodigy looks.
Brett Gray: Me too.
Ella Purnell: They're like completely different vibes, but I like 'em.
Brett, how about you?
Brett Gray: Yeah, I would say Lower Decks, too. I would love to see them come to the boujee world of CGI. And then we can go visit their world too and see what we look like in their style of animation. I think that'd be dope. But I totally agree that there needs to be some sort of crossover at some point and also that if we need to do live-action, we should. (laughs) We should!
Totally. Let's manifest it.
Brett Gray: Let's manifest it. But you're right, Ella. Maybe with animatronics.
Ella Purnell: Yeah.
Brett Gray: Seven hours in the makeup chair every morning...

Ella Purnell: Yeah. Honestly, when I don't have COVID anymore, I'm sure I'll do it but right now I'm like, pfft. Okay.
