Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show is an American sitcom television series created by Ed Ferrara and Kevin Murphy, based on the 1989 movie of the same name.
The show first aired in syndication on September 27th, 1997 for three seasons, ending on May 20th, 2000. The series aired later on channels such as The Disney Channel and The Hub Network.
Synopsis
The series follows the Szalinski family. Wacky inventor father Wayne (Peter Scolari), his wife Diane (Barbara Alyn Woods), their children Amy (Hillary Tuck) and Nick (Thomas Dekker) and their dog Quark, now living in Matheson, Delaware. Aside from his shrinking machine which once shrunk Amy and Nick, along with Little Russ and Ron, the sons of their former neighbors The Thompsons, Wayne also now invents many crazy new inventions that more often than not go awry. From cloning devices, brain switching machines and other wacky inventions (including the classic shrink ray), each episode has the Szalinskis having to find a way to turn everything back to normal.
The series premiered in September of 1997, the same year as the final film in the series, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. It was intended to be a semi-direct adaptation from the original 1989 movie and not its 1992 follow-up Honey, I Blew Up the Kid. As such, the Szalinski's youngest son Adam isn't featured in the series (though the series finale mentions Diane being pregnant, likely with Adam). Instead of Rick Moranis returning as Wayne Szalinski, Bosom Buddies star Peter Scolari took on the role instead. Show creators Kevin Murphy and Ed Ferrara would leave the series after its first season and would be replaced by Stuart Gordon and Ed Naha, two of the creators of the original movie. The show aired for three seasons on syndication with 66 completed episodes yet would end up cancelled after low ratings. Reruns aired periodically on channels such as The Disney Channel and later The Hub Network. The latter network re-airing a once "lost" episode Honey, I Shrunk the Science Dude. The episode stopped airing in normal rotation due to a licensing deal with McDonald's at the time. The series never received any form of home video release and has yet to be added to Disney Plus.
